Google Eyes Africa

Internet search king Google Inc. has its eyes set on conquering the African continent. The search engine company has announced plans to enter Portugal in order to access the African market indirectly.

"We want to enter Africa, not through fixed-line Internet access but through mobile access. We think it would be easier if we worked with countries that work directly with these nations," Google head of European corporate development Anil Hansjee told Portuguese daily Diario de Noticias on Monday.

Google is already doing well in Europe and is experiencing remarkable growth in England.

Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome & Principe are all former Portuguese colonies and Portuguese IT and telecommunications firms are still the dominant players. It is by working with these companies that Google plans to enter the African market.

"It (the Portuguese market) is a small market, which can be good to test business models, something that is difficult to do in big markets," the Google executive stated.
