BET’s new CEO Debra Lee hires filmmaker Reginald Hudlin as chief programmer

BET has hired veteran filmmaker Reginald Hudlin as its chief programmer, a move that industry observers hailed as a positive sign for a network that has long faced criticism for lacking quality programming.

Hudlin becomes chief programming executive in charge of BET’s music, entertainment, specials, sports, news and public affairs, film and program acquisitions, home entertainment and programming development units.

"For me, the opportunity to work on such a giant canvas, in the form a 24/7 network, is just incredible," said Hudlin, whose film credits include "Boomerang" and "House Party." "It's a great entrepreneurial opportunity."

Hudlin will split his time among BET's production hubs in New York, Los Angeles and its headquarters in Washington.

BET president and CEO Debra Lee identified naming a programming chief as one of her first priorities after she was promoted to the top job by founder and Chairman Robert Johnson.

"As I look at the next five years, there's really a major objective to improve current programming," Lee said. "BET is a great brand with a great line-up, but I want to take it to the next level."

Hudlin is regarded as a pioneering and influential catalyst behind the modern Black film movement, exploding on the scene with older brother Warrington in 1990 with production of the comedy “House Party.” His filmography also lists “Boomerang”, “The Great White Hype”, the first Black animated feature “Bebe’s Kids” and “The Ladies Man” among his producer and directorial credits. Hudlin’s most recent film, the Paramount Pictures romantic comedy “Serving Sarah” in 2002, featured former Friends star Matthew Perry, British actress Elizabeth Hurley and comedian Cedric “The Entertainer.”
